Objective of the traineeship
The objective of the traineeship is twofold:
- Contribute to analytical work: you will develop and manage large macroeconomic, microeconomic and financial databases. You will assist the economists of the Economics Department with econometric and statistical analysis, helping them prepare contributions to economic reports, policy briefs and the weekly summary of key economic news. This requires specialised knowledge that is typical for students who have graduated with a Master of Science in economics or finance or are enrolled in a PhD programme in economics or finance.
- Gain valuable professional experience: you will benefit from the opportunity to work in an international financial institution, obtaining insights into economic, financial and policy analysis, establishing professional contacts, and gaining knowledge on the functioning of the EIB.
Responsibilities
Under the supervision of an economist of the Economics Department, you will carry out work related to various projects, such as the development and management of large macroeconomic, microeconomic and financial databases, econometric and statistical analysis for the preparation of the EIB Investment Report and other reports of the Department, the weekly summary of key economic news, economic and policy briefs, country reports, the EIB Investment Survey (EIBIS), the EIB municipality survey, the CESEE bank lending survey, internal models for sovereign risk rating and bank industry risk ratings, and macroeconomic scenarios, among others.
Your main tasks will be to:
- Extract, prepare, develop and manage large datasets for econometric and statistical analysis.
- Prepare basic descriptive statistics, charts, tables and short reports based on data analysis.
- Collaborate with economists in developing econometric and statistical models for data analysis.
- Assist economists in exploring and interpreting the results from the econometric and statistical analysis, helping them prepare contributions to economic reports, policy briefs and the weekly summary of key economic news.
Academic qualifications and professional skills
- Bachelor in economics, finance or data science is a prerequisite, and ideally a MSc in economics, finance or data science.
- Ability to work with statistical software, such as Stata, R or Python, is essential.
- Good knowledge of applied economics, corporate finance, or econometric and statistical methods for the analysis of macroeconomic, microeconomic or financial data is essential.
- Previous experience with the development and maintenance of large databases, including firm-level data, is considered as an advantage.
- Previous experience or University studies focusing on the analysis of data on firm dynamics, public or private investment, investment finance, corporate finance or financial sector performance is considered as an advantage.
- Analytical skills and ability to clearly communicate results are essential.
- Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English is essential.
