How will you contribute?
The focused ion beam (FIB) tool has revolutionized nanofabrication, allowing manipulation of materials on the nanoscale. By using liquid metal alloy ion sources (LMAIS), applications beyond milling and imaging, most importantly ion implantation with nanoscale positioning accuracy are accessible.
The Advanced Instrumentation and Nano-Analytics (AINA) group at LIST is standing up fabrication capabilities using FIB, for which the fabrication of LMAIS will be an essential step. The aim of the present internship is to design, assemble, automate, and test a source preparation unit for the fabrication of LMAIS. Once the source preparation unit is built and LMAIS can be fabricated, the sources will be tested in a Wien filtered column, where the achievable spot size, mass resolution, and stability will be tested.
The internship will comprise of building the LMAIS preparation unit, specifically identification of the required components, and interfacing of high voltage, high current, temperature control, and vacuum hardware. Additionally, LMAIS will be fabricated, requiring familiarization with the material science involved in filament and source material selection, for example interpretation of phase diagrams. Lastly, testing in a prototype FIB will be performed.
The preferred duration for the internship is 6 months.
You will be mainly in charge of:
1.Building of a LMAIS preparation unit
Identification of required components
Interfacing of high voltage, high current, temperature control, and vacuum components
2.LMAIS fabrication
Become familiar with material science involved in source material selection
Testing of liquid metal alloy ion source filaments
